Shaped by Stone

Shaped by Stone is a collaboration between artist Tom Baskeyfield and photographer Mario Popham that investigates our connection to, and dependence on this ancient stuff of the land. How have we sought to shape stone? How has it in turn shaped us?

Strata to Streets, the first chapter completed between 2015-16, examines the foundation of Macclesfield and the direct connection between a small market town and the local quarry from where the town’s gritstone foundations were sourced.

Work is currently underway on the second instalment, Flesh and Stone, which sees the pair examining the legacy of industrialisation in North Wales by training their focus on the extraction and dissemination of slate.

Flesh and Stone will have its first exhibition at HOME in Manchester from the 9th of March until the 29th of April 2018 and the work will be published as a book by Tide Press later in the year.

Research and development for the project will be presented on this site via the blog and will be updated periodically.
